Take Action Today! West Virginia sportsmen should contact their state senator and ask them to vote YES on Senate Bill 451. West Virginia members can find their state senator by using the Sportsmen’s Alliance’s Legislative Action Center.
On Feb. 16, members of the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee recommended passage of legislation that would allow Sunday hunting on public land. Currently, Sunday hunting is only permitted on private property.
Senate Bill 451, sponsored by Sen. Mark R. Maynard (R-Genoa), would open up all public lands for hunting on Sundays. The bill had already been recommended for passage on Feb. 6 from the Senate Natural Resources Committee and will now head to the senate floor for a full vote.
In today’s world, many sportsmen work six days a week, and have difficulty finding time to get into nature for hunting. Opening hunting on Sundays provides a boon to local economies and keeps sportsmen actively hunting. The additional day of hunting is expected to pump $9 million in to the economy, and $600,000 into conservation funding.
“West Virginia is one of just a handful of states that do not allow people to hunt any day of the week on lands purchased by the public,” said Luke Houghton, associate director of state services for Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Senate Bill 451 would treat all West Virginia hunters equally and give them the same rights as hunters across the country. “
