The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee held a public hearing on Senate Bill 147 that would permit Sunday hunting in the Keystone State. The archaic Blue Law banning Sunday hunting in the Commonwealth was originally enacted in 1682 before Pennsylvania was granted statehood and has prohibited sportsmen from going afield ever since.

Pennsylvania is one of only three states with a near-total ban on Sunday hunting. The Sportsmen’s Alliance and a broad coalition of local Pennsylvania sportsmen’s groups, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Rifle Association, have been working with legislators in both chambers of the Pennsylvania legislature to remove the centuries’ old ban. Senate Bill 147 would permit hunting on three Sunday: one during deer gun season, one during deer archery season and one determined by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The Pennsylvania Senate approved the bill 36-14 on June 26.
By lifting the ban, the Commonwealth will join neighboring states Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia who already allow hunting on Sundays. SB 147 also strengthens trespassing laws in order to make sure that private landowners’ interests are addressed.
“This bill represents tremendous compromise by Pennsylvania sportsmen and women who have worked for many years to see these unnecessary and antiquated prohibitions removed,” said Bruce Tague vice president of government affairs for Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Opening opportunities like this is vitally important to the future of hunting. With this bill already through the senate, we’re calling on the Game and Fisheries Committee move this bill forward.”
