Take Action Today! Maryland sportsmen should contact their state delegate and ask them to vote YES on House Bill 1338. Sunday hunting is good for sportsmen and the economy. Maryland members can find their state delegate by using the Sportsmen’s Alliance Legislative Action Center.
Legislation in Maryland that would open hunting on both private and public land on Sundays will get a hearing on March 7. Current law restricts Sunday hunting to specific counties. House Bill 1338, sponsored by Delegate Carl Anderton (R-38B), would give the Maryland Department of Natural Resources the ability to designate where Sunday hunting could take place. HB 1338 also allows for hunting on additional Sundays during gun, bow and muzzleloader deer seasons.
House Bill 1338 will be heard before the House Environment and Transportation Committee at 1 p.m. in the House Office Building room 250.
With the current workweek and busy lives, hunters have little time to prepare, scout and actually hunt. Opening hunting on Sundays would give experienced and new hunters the opportunity to hunt more, and enjoy the lands and game their license and tag fees help purchase and protect. Additionally, Sunday hunting is expected to pump millions of dollars into the state’s economy and conservation funding.
“Hunting is a time-intensive practice, and hunters have to balance it with busy family lives – almost every other state understands that limiting time afield is detrimental to their success, and to recruitment and retention of hunters,” said Luke Houghton associate director of state services for Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Maryland hunters deserve the opportunities and respect that an extra day of hunting provides.”
