New Jersey State Senator Joseph Cryan has introduced legislation that increases the age that an individual can purchase a rifle or shotgun to 21. Senate Bill 3605 was referred to the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee where it awaits a hearing.

Under current New Jersey law, 18-year-olds can obtain firearm purchaser identification cards, making them eligible to purchase shotguns and rifles for hunting or target shooting. This legislation will prevent anyone from receiving a firearm purchaser identification card until they turn 21 years old.
The bill is so extreme, that it would even prevent those actively serving in the U.S. military from purchasing a firearm before they turn 21. Under this bill an 18-, 19- or 20-year-old servicemember could not purchase a shotgun or rifle to hunt or target shooting in New Jersey.
“Not only is this bill another example of activist legislators trying to undermine sportsmen’s rights and their ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights,” said Jacob Hupp, associate director of state services at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “It also sends a message to our men and women in uniform that while we’ll arm them overseas, that they can’t be trusted with a firearm in their own state.”
