Legislation proposed in the New York State Assembly would allow hunters to use crossbows during open archery seasons. Assembly Bill 9623, introduced by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D-Forestburgh) on March 22, would permit crossbow use for both deer and bears, along with small game for residents ages 12 and older.
AB 9623 is identical to Senate Bill 7005, introduced by Senator Patrick Gallivan (R- Elma), which was sent to the Senate Committee on Environmental Conservation on March 15.
Current law treats crossbows similar to muzzleloaders, and limits their usage to special early and late seasons along with the firearms season. Assembly Bill 9623 would allow crossbow hunting during archery season, and reduce the age minimum for crossbows from age 14 to age 12, which is the same as archery,
