At an extravagant gala in New York City, Humane Society International, the global arm of the Humane Society of the United States, the world’s largest and richest animal-rights organization, recently bestowed their “Cecil Award” upon comedian, actor and director Ricky Gervais for his outspoken advocacy against “trophy” hunting.
Gervais has routinely used social media to target hunters that his 10 million followers then threaten publicly, privately and professionally – including death threats. Women, such as Melissa Bachman, Rebecca Francis, Tess Thompson Talley and others, especially seem to be singled out by the Golden Globe and Emmy-award winner.
Mainstream media meanwhile decries cyber bullying in nightly news stories, but blissfully and aggressively reports on Gervais’ tweets and posts, and the ensuing fallout, amplifying that very effect while profiting from ad revenue the salacious stories produce, but almost never condemning the Hollywood elitist for putting careers and lives in danger.
The Humane Society of the United States acknowledged as much in a press release: “By speaking out in the media and to his millions of fans on social media, Gervais raised tremendous global consciousness and outrage against horrific trophy hunting.”
The awards gala purported to support “the rescue, care, placement and potential rehoming of thousands of animals every year,” and took place at the swanky Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, where guests enjoyed a plant-based dinner created by celebrity Chef Chloe Coscarelli, and was chaired by Georgina Bloomberg, the daughter of former New York City billionaire mayor and anti-gun zealot Michael Bloomberg, and was hosted by Tony award-winning actress and singer Sutton Foster.
As for the fundraising goals, it’s been well documented that less than one percent of the Humane Society of the United States’ budget goes to animal shelters, while more than $100 million has been socked away in Caribbean accounts and millions paid out in a federal racketeering settlement.
The fact that the Humane Society coalition would idolize someone who routinely targets women should come as no surprise, as sexual harassment and misconduct have long been a systemic issue at the organization.
