House Bill 1147, sponsored by Representative Peggy Anne Gibson (D-Huron), would transfer all authority over trapping from the Department of Game, Fish and Parks to the Department of Agriculture.
If passed, trapping seasons, dates, and bag limits would be set by the Department of Agriculture instead of Game, Fish and Parks. The Department of Agriculture would also be responsible for the enforcement of all trapping laws and regulations.
“This bill would take wildlife management authority out of the hands of wildlife professionals and give it to an agency that has no expertise in managing wildlife,” said Jeremy Rine, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance In-House Counsel. “Management of wildlife is the core responsibility of the Department of Game, Fish and Parks – and should remain so. South Dakota sportsmen need to speak up to ensure that hunting, fishing, and trapping remain regulated by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks.”
The bill is currently pending in the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources.
